3 great songs. 3 songs with the same name.
How in god's name weren't there any lawsuits?
Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, and the Foo Fighters have all had phenomenal music careers and each artist has a hit song called "Learning to Fly". Well technically, the Foo Fighters called their song "Learn to Fly" (why they cut the "ing" is a mystery)
You guys couldn't have thought of a somewhat different name for your song? Were you trying to one-up each other? Many questions unanswered.
I guess we'll give Pink Floyd the edge in this one since they were the first ones to come out with the song in 1987. Wait a minute, they weren't?
That's right. In 1985, Emerson,Lake, and Powell(What happened to Palmer?) released their "Learning to Fly" before anyone else did. So really if anyone should be upset, it should be these guys. But I guess stealing song titles are not as big as stealing guitar riffs or drum beats. I certainly would be pissed right off if I wrote a #1 hit and then someone else calls their song the name of my song and also hits #1 on the charts.
And then the shit hit the fan.
Posh Spice's 2001 autobiography: Learning to Fly (Ironically came out on 9/13/01, 2 days after 9/11)
Hilary Duff 2004 Music DVD: Learning to Fly
Wouldn't you want a more original name for your book or your DVD?
Was "Training to Soar" not available?
"Studying to aviate"?
"Getting the hang of becoming a pilot?" Now there's a song title.
Here are the 3 hit songs. Judge for yourself which one is better.
(My personal choice: Foo Fighters.
I've never really gotten into Pink Floyd's music post-Roger Waters even though I can be seen wearing a Division Bell t-shirt from time to time. The reason for this....everyone in high school had Dark Side of the Moon shirts. I had to change it up.
Meanwhile in Petty's version, the same chords are played over and over and over and over again (F,C,Am,G...F,C,Am,G). Great song but that repetitiveness makes me go with the Foo Fighters on this one.
Here are all 3 vids
Foo Fighters (1997)
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (1991)
Pink Floyd (1987)
And just for the hell of it.. the original
Emerson,Lake & Powell (1986) (1:40-2:07....Holy Dinah!!)
